Viqueque situated 183kms from Dili on the southern coast, played an important role during the resistance, with the FALINTIL Guerilla fighters being able to hide out and make this a stronghold of resistance. Local stories about acts of bravery by the guerilla men and women abound. The district is known for its onshore gas deposits.  You’ll also find Ossu, with its gigantic white boulders following the track of a narrow river, eco friendly accommodation options are available here. Further down south near the town of Uatolari you can drive over a bridge and peer down to the river that is home to some of Timor-’s largest crocodiles, and here and also further east at Uato-Carbou you can see the north of Australia on a clear day.
